Fights that need to happen in 2016

Happy New Year! As you all get over your hangovers, why don’t you have a read of the 10 fights I think need to happen in 2016. 2015 was a huge year for British boxing and it got me thinking about 2016. We’ve got the return of David Haye and George Groves in January, Quigg v Frampton and Terry Flanagan v Derry Matthews in February, Eubank Jr v Blackwell for the British Middleweight title looks nailed on and we’ve of course got Fury v Klitschko 2 (hopefully in England). But there are other fights that I would like to see. This is how I’ve come up with my list:

  • I’m going to stick with domestic fights for my list (and I’m including Irish fighters in this).
  • Some of the fighters I’ve picked have fights already lined up this year but I’m going on the basis that they will win their scheduled bouts to set up my wish list.
  • Some of the fighters will need to win a few to set up the fights on my wish list and again I’m going on the basis that they will do so and set up my wish list.

Here are the top 10 fights that I would like to see in 2016:

10. Tyson Fury vs David Haye

This is so low on my list because I doubt it will happen any time soon, if at all. Fury has gone on record saying he would vacate any belt that Haye was mandatory for rather than fighting him, so unless Fury has a change of heart the fight will forever be in the “what if” category. BUT that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen. If David Haye is the same Haye as he was before he pulled out of the two fights with Fury, both he and Fury are the top two Heavyweights in Britain at the moment and the fight would do unbelievably well. I would love to see this fight happen!

About Chris Waddams

I've been a boxing fan for as long as I can remember, going back to the fights between Benn/Eubank/Collins and probably even earlier if I think really hard! My favourite boxer growing up was Lennox Lewis, but when he retired it switched to Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe. Of our current crop of starts I really like Paul Smith Jr and Kevin Mitchell (even if he's a West Ham fan...). I'm also a big Andy Lee fan. Away from boxing I'm a season ticket holder at Tottenham Hotspur and I also write a Spurs blog (www.thfc1882.com)
