We think we know what we’re talking about – The X-Mas Cracker

So this is our third attempt at “We think we know what we’re talking about” and we’re upping the ante by making it a competition between the writers at Boxing Britain! So keep an eye out for our future “score cards”! This week we’re going to try and predict the two world title fights on the “X-Mas Cracker” card. As normal we’ve asked a few of our boxing friends to give us their predictions, and they obviously know what they’re talking about !

But first lets have your say  !!

ANDY LEE V BILLY JOE SAUNDERS - WHO WINS?

Andy Lee vs Billy Joe Saunders

Let’s gets this right, this a brilliant fight and the fact it is not sold out is an absolute travesty. Lee has had a couple of big setbacks in his career but has bounced back fantastically. He’s been outboxed a couple of times but his power has brought him through, especially when knocking John Jackson out and then by stopping Matt Korobov to win the WBO title. Saunders has rarely looked in trouble in beating John Ryder over 12 and winning every round against Spike O’Sullivan. He then beat Chris Eubank Jnr over 12 rounds which is a win he has never been given the credit he deserves and a win that will look better and better over the next few years. I’ve been trying to call this since the day it was made. My initial thought was that Lee would stop Saunders but I have swayed and changed my opinion on a weekly basis. My heart says Lee and my head says Saunders on points but I’m going with my heart and picking a Lee win by mid to late stoppage or on a close points decision – Richard Hammel (@ChaddersCha), Boxing Britain writer

Sky only boxing fans probably think this is a nothing fight and doesn’t mean as much as the Joshua vs Whyte fight but they would be wrong. This fight is huge. The middleweight division in history only ever played bridesmaid to the heavyweights so the fact we’ve got a World Middleweight Title fight happening on these shores is unbelievable. Getting to the actual fight it’s being sold as a complete 50/50 fight. The bookies can’t split them. But I’m gonna! Saunders is an amazing talent but seemed to tire against Eubank Jr in the latter rounds. Lee is underrated as a boxer, many say he’s just a puncher which he isn’t. And he’s come on leaps and bounds since joining forces with Adam Booth. I’m backing Lee to win via a K.O in the final quarter of the fight. If I was putting a bet on a round I’d go for the 9th – Chris Waddams (@chriswadds), Boxing Britain writer

This is a great fight that I’ve really been looking forward too. Most people I’ve spoken to believe it to be a genuine 50/50 fight and I have to agree. I think it will be a cagey fight between the evenly matched pair and could make a case for both fighters to win. However I’m going to go with Andy Lee stoppage in the late rounds. I feel BJS will get caught late on when tiring and will fall short in his first world title fight – Tommy Lloyd Jr (@tommylloydjr), Boxing Britain writer

I’m expecting this to be a good fight! It’s 50/50 as well! Lee has the power, but Saunders is technically a better boxer. I reckon this fight will go the 12 rounds because they’re both hungry for a win! It will be close on the score cards, but I think Saunders will win on points – Claire Blake (@cymb_xo), Boxing Britain writer

Firstly I hope the best man wins – the guy who’s trained the hardest and wants it more. I slightly favour Billy Joe to win on points. Judging on Lee’s last few fights his styles not about work rate – he seems to catch them and hurt them. I really rate Saunders work rate and busy style. I feel stupid writing Andy Lee off because that right hook could undo and has undone others. BUT I’m going Saunders on points – Ryan Walsh (@Walsh7Ryan), British Featherweight Champion

If Billy Joe can stay away from Lee’s big right hook then I think he could be crowned World Champion – John Wayne Hibbert (@JWHIBBERT), Super-Lightweight Commonwealth and WBC International Champion

    LIAM SMITH V JIMMY KELLY

      Liam Smith v Jimmy Kelly

The fight is your typical first defence of a world title, a routine victory and one I can see coming inside the distance. Yes Kelly is undefeated but I don’t see him causing Liam Smith too many problems and I’m going for a stoppage something between rounds 7-10 – Richard Hammel

Smith vs Kelly seems to be more of a grudge match than the Lee vs Saunders one. So it all depends on how well “Beefy” keeps his head. If he does I seem him winning within 4 rounds, if not it could be a hard fight for him but he’ll still get the decision. Again if I was to bet I’d put my money on a 3rd round win for Smith – Chris Waddams

Smith’s first defence of his WBO strap and he’s up against the relatively unknown Kelly who has not even fought for a British title. This fight pits Liverpool v Manchester but i doubt this one will live long in the memory. I see an easy nights work for Smith and expect him to stop his opponent in the middle rounds – Tommy Lloyd Jr

I think this fight may be being hyped up to more than it is. Kelly is inexperienced and is already taking about loosing in interviews. ‘Even if I were to lose in good style, it’s a win.’ That’s not something a fighter says if he is confident in himself! Kelly is a fast jabber and he will rise to the challenge making it a decent fight, but Smith will get a stoppage 6/7th round – Claire Blake

Again I hope the best man wins. Experience will be the big factor and again I really rate Liam Smith. I expect him to win well and I’m going for the K.O after 8 body shots. What little I’ve seen of Kelly has impressed me and I think it’ll be a stylistically good fight to watch! I’m going with a Smith K.O – Ryan Walsh

Liam Smith retains his title – John Wayne Hibbert

Smith will win hands down, he was very controlled in his last fight. Although Kelly can fight! – Jazza Dickens (@JazzaDickens10), British Super-Bantamweight Champion

      Chris Waddams
I've been a boxing fan for as long as I can remember, going back to the fights between Benn/Eubank/Collins and probably even earlier if I think really hard! My favourite boxer growing up was Lennox Lewis, but when he retired it switched to Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe. Away from boxing I'm a season ticket holder at Tottenham Hotspur and I also write a Spurs blog (www.thfc1882.com)
