After winning his recent WBA Continental Title fight against Kent Lightweight Adam Dingsdale, Boxing Britain’s Chris ‘Lispy’ Glover caught up with Derry Mathews. Derry who is now 36-9-2 is looking to bigger and better things in 2015.
How did you feel the fight against Dingsdale went?
“The way I planned it too. If the knockout came it came. I had a great game plan from Danny and Georgie and I executed it perfectly. I feel I gave him a boxing lesson and didn’t get out of second gear”
Has training in Marbella oppose to Scotland/Liverpool helped your preparation?
“Yes, the weather is excellent for a start. Working with Taff the strenght and conditioner has helped a lot too as I’ve made the weight the best I’ve ever had it and been the fittest I’ve been in years. Me, Danny and Taff have gelled really well and we bounce off each other. Also working with Daniel Kihanan at the MGM who can’t do enough for you and having diet maintained by Slanties bar Banus has made things a lot lot easier in camp”.
After picking up the WBA Continental title are you looking for a final eliminator with the likes of Jorge Linares or Darleys Perez?
“I just want big fights. I would fight either of those two tomorrow. I really want the Emilio Marsilli rematch (Current European Champion) as I’ve never lost a rematch. He is ranked high in all the governing bodies so it could pave the way for a world title shot. Paulus Moses just will not fight me but I’d also love a big domestic clash”.
What are your thoughts on Crolla, Mitchell, Burns?
“Crolla and his team do notwant it, simple as! Mitchell and Burns would be great fights I’d take them tomorrow. I’ll leave it down to Daniel and the team to sort my next opponent out but I want it to be a big fight”.
Out of the current world champions who would you most want to fight?
“RIchard Abril or Mickey Bey, I feel Abril is the best as Crawford is moving up. I reckon I could outbox Mickey Bey but the Abril fight is the more likely. I only want to fight the best and at 31 I feel I’m the best lightweight in Britain and I deserve a world title shot”.
In the mean time what are you doing?
“I run a gym in town just off Vauxhall Road which has been accredited now as an amateur boxing club. I feel like I should give back to boxing as it has given me so much. We have around 40 kids in a night and have 17 carded amateurs ranging from 11-22. My gym is also home to the Vaughan Camp where I work alongside Georgie Vaughan and Lee Owen working with 6 pros. It’s a really good little stable we have. We also have keep fitters in the gym it’s designed for everyone. I’ve also started running bootcamps in Marbella and Liverpool called Max Bootcamps which offer people the chance to train like a pro for a week”.
Derry who are you picking to come out on top of the big upcoming domestic clashes?
“Bellew beats Cleverly, Fury beats Chisora, Billy Joe Saunders beats Eubank Jr”
We would like to thank Derry for giving us his time.
